After the Cullens could no longer pull off the ages they were claiming, they moved. Quil and Embry went back to Sam's pack as soon as Jacob decided to travel with the Cullens, because he couldn't stand to be apart from Renesmee. Leah and Seth followed as well. This didn't exactly please Edward and Bella, but they didn't object. They moved to their second house, located in Alaska near the Denali Coven - the coven that the Cullens call their extended family. Edward, Bella, Renesmee, and Jacob traveled back and forth to Forks to visit Charlie up until his death only ten short years after the Cullens left Washington. A nomad vampire killed him while he was looking for a missing child in the woods. After that attack, no other vampires had been sighted in Forks.

Two hundred years have passed and the Cullens, along with the Denali Coven, have just moved back to Forks. Since there hasn't been any recent vampire activity, Sam's pack was free to stop phasing, and have all died. Jacob moved back to La Push with Sam and Leah, but spends most of his time in Forks with Renesmee. The Treaty has been altered so that the Cullens and Denali are allowed on Quileute land as long as they remain vegetarians. However, vampire activity means new shape-shifters. So every month the Cullens and Denali have to meet in the La Push woods so the new shape-shifters can distinguish their scents.

Edward and Bella have moved back into the Cullen Mansion with Renesmee and the cottage was torn down. Alice can see hybrids and shape-shifters now that she is used to being around Jacob's pack and Renesmee. Jasper still has the hardest time controlling his thirst, but he's getting better with every decade. Emmett and Rosalie are better than ever, though Rosalie is perhaps just a little too motherly to Renesmee. Carlisle has returned to the hospital. Esme has been having the time of her existence decorating the Denali house. The Denali, not wanting to be too close to the Cullens, have chosen to build their house in the forest on the other side of Forks.

Everything seemed to be going so well. But everything is about to change. A coven of vegetarian vampires known as the Johnson family have moved into Forks, Washington. That wouldn't be a big problem, except the Hayes family, another group of shape-shifters, have come with them. These shifters also, by chance, turn into wolves. They live next door to the Johnsons in town, and a few of the Hayes were actually seeing the Johnsons. That is, until Leah and Seth imprint on members of the Johnson family, causing problems between the two packs.

To make matters worse, Alice keeps having visions of the Volturi returning. Jane is especially determined to destroy the Cullens. Caius has taken over the Volturi, believing that Aro and Marcus were no longer necessary, and convinced the guard to kill the two and Aro's wife, but Marcus has gotten away, and is heading to Forks to ask for protection from the Cullens.
